Over 50 years following Marilyn Monroe’s sultry serenade to the President, the birthday song continues to live on with new renditions from Madonna, Jennifer Lopez and more.
It’s been more than 50 years since Marilyn Monroe first serenaded President John F. Kennedy with a sultry rendition of the birthday song during his 45th birthday celebration in 1962, but “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” hasn’t been forgotten.
On what would have been Kennedy’s 98th birthday, THR highlights ten times that the President’s birthday song was referenced in pop culture.

The pop icon, donning Monroe’s signature blonde curls and sparkly gown, sang a comical remake of the tune as part of a Saturday Night Live skit in 1993, during which she successfully seduced an eager and excited Kennedy.
2. Wayne’s World
In the 1992 comedy, based off of the popular SNL sketch, Mike Myers sang the song while wearing underwear and a pink bra.
3. Breaking Bad
During season two of the AMC series, Anna Gunn’s character Skyler White was forced to fulfill her boss Ted Beneke’s birthday wish by singing “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” during a company birthday celebration.
4. Jennifer Lopez
The singer channeled her inner Marilyn Monroe on the set of Lopez Tonight, where she made a surprise appearance and serenaded host George Lopez.
5. Two and a Half Men
After a night of excessive drinking, Charlie Harper (played by Charlie Sheen) recalled a drunken memory in which Alan Harper (played by Jon Cryer) wore a blonde wig and sang “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” into a hair brush.
6. The Simpsons
In an episode of The Simpsons, Mr. Smithers imagined a naked Mr. Burns popping out of a cake and singing the song to him for his birthday.
7. Lana Del Rey
Lana Del Rey paid tribute to Monroe by opening the music video for her song “National Anthem” with a short cover of “Happy Birthday, Mr. President.” Rapper A$AP Rocky portrayed the President in the singer’s video.
8. Uma Thurman
During her guest arc on NBC’s Smash, Thurman played the role of a Hollywood star recruited to play Monroe in a Broadway musical.
9. Norma Jean & Marilyn
In the 1996 TV movie based on the life of Monroe, Mira Sorvino sang the song in a scene that recreated Monroe’s famous onstage moment.
10. Marilyn Monroe
The original singer of “Happy Birthday, Mr. President,” the blonde bombshell sang the birthday tune for President Kennedy during a 45th birthday celebration (that was held ten days before his actual birthday) in 1962. She created her own rendition of the classic birthday song by adding the lyrics: ” Thanks, Mr. President / For all the things you’ve done / The battles that you’ve won / The way you deal with U.S. Steel / And our problems by the ton / We thank you so much.”
